413-423 – Calls – What’s your favorite movie of all time and why? (I just a great old movie, “All About Eve,” which won 6 Oscars in 1950, starring Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, with a brief appearance by Marilyn Monroe.) It doesn’t have to be the quality of the movie to count, it could have special personal significance for you. Maybe it was a first kiss, a proposal, a “we’re expecting,” a wonderful bonding time with mom or dad, or a relative, or maybe it was a spiritual or emotional epiphany that was triggered. What’s your “guess what special thing happened at the movies” story?

400-408 – • Jill Scott (Essence, April 2011) Commentary: Jill Scott Talks Interracial Dating. Jill Scott is a three-time Grammy Award-winning artist, writer, actress, philanthropist and mother.
My new friend is handsome, African-American, intelligent and seemingly wealthy. He is an athlete, loves his momma, and is happily married to a White woman. I admit when I saw his wedding ring, I privately hoped. But something in me just knew he didn’t marry a sister. Although my guess hit the mark, when my friend told me his wife was indeed Caucasian, I felt my spirit…wince. I didn’t immediately understand it. My face read happy for you. My body showed no reaction to my inner pinch, but the sting was there, quiet like a mosquito under a summer dress. //
413-423 – Calls – Let’s talk about interracial marriage in the church. If Jill involuntarily “winces” when she discovers a black man is married to a white woman, does this happen with any other combinations? So, put together male and female in each of the big ethnic categories: white, black, Hispanic, Asian, etc. Do any of them have the same “wince-factor” as a black man and white woman? Do Asian families still wince if their daughters date a non-Asian? Have any of you experienced even subtle racism in your churches? When you were young, what happened when you wanted to date cross-racially? Did you have a “guess who’s coming to dinner” moment with your family? Are young people today “past” all this racism stuff?
428-437 – Calls –
443-452 – Calls – Christine, a black woman, says she knows why black women wince at black men who marry white women. She says she has three black uncles who all married white women, and that nearly all her black male friends growing up had all said they would never marry a black woman. And with illegitimacy at 72% in the black community, they are already in great need of black husbands.
458-508 – Calls – Roger, a black man, says that many black men don’t want to date black women because they’re too bossy and their standards are too high – they all want “Denzel, Barack, or Kobe.”

The four principles of his ministry are “Commit, Stay, Reconcile, and Grow.” When the gay community is asked what they want from “us,” it comes down to two things, “Don’t lie to me,” and “Don’t leave me.” Do you really mean it when you say, “You can tell me anything” and “I”ll always be here for you”?

A Cleveland man was attacked by a housecat Friday afternoon and the man’s injuries are so severe that he had to be taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The altercation between the man and the animal occurred at a home on CR 3182 a few miles south of Cleveland in Liberty County. At some point during the attack, the man and the cat reportedly were injured by a knife the man was holding. The man was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center before being transported to Houston. Game wardens Danny Diaz and Adam Broll captured the cat. It was taken to Big Thicket Animal Hospital for examination. The man’s identity is unknown at this time.
Game Warden Danny Diaz expected to find an animal a little more fierce than the tabby cat he encountered when he was called to a home on CR 3182 in Cleveland on Friday. The cat, like the one pictured, was mortally wounded by a man who attacked the cat with a knife after the cat reportedly attacked the man. During the struggle with the cat, the man sustained cuts and injuries so serious that he had to be taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The cat was later euthanized by a Cleveland veterinarian.

512-523 – • Kevin Burke (NRO, 5/4/2011) Post-Abortion Trauma: “Jesus, what have I done?”
Long before he won accolades as an American Idol judge, Steven Tyler was a bona-fide rock star, with all that that implied. In 1975, when he was in his late 20s and the lead singer for the band Aerosmith, Tyler persuaded the parents of his 14-year-old girlfriend, Julia Holcomb, to make him her legal guardian so that they could live together in Boston.
When Miss Holcomb and Tyler conceived a child, his longtime friend Ray Tabano convinced Tyler that abortion was the only solution. In the Aerosmith “autobiography,” Walk This Way (in which recollections by all the band members, and their friends and lovers, were assembled by the author Stephen Davis), Tabano says: “So they had the abortion, and it really messed Steven up because it was a boy. He . . . saw the whole thing and it [messed] him up big time.”
Tyler also reflects on his abortion experience in the autobiography. “It was a big crisis. It’s a major thing when you’re growing something with a woman, but they convinced us that it would never work out and would ruin our lives. . . . You go to the doctor and they put the needle in her belly and they squeeze the stuff in and you watch. And it comes out dead. I was pretty devastated. In my mind, I’m going, Jesus, what have I done?”

400-408 – • Vanity Fair (5/3/2011) Katy Perry on Her Religious Childhood, Her Career, and Her Marriage to Russell Brand. She’s the June cover of Vanity Fair, which hits the stands today. Her real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson.
“My career is like an artichoke,” Katy Perry tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Lisa Robinson. “People might think that the leaves are tasty and buttered up and delicious, and they don’t even know that there’s something magical hidden at the base of it. There’s a whole other side [of me] that people didn’t know existed.”
Perry, who tells Robinson that she wants her ashes shot out over the Santa Barbara coast in a firework, reveals that one side of her she has definitively left behind is her born-again upbringing. “I didn’t have a childhood,” she says, adding that her mother never read her any books except the Bible, and that she wasn’t allowed to say “deviled eggs” or “Dirt Devil.” Perry wasn’t even allowed to listen to secular music and relied on friends to sneak her CDs. “Growing up, seeing Planned Parenthood, it was considered like the abortion clinic,” she tells Robinson. “I was always scared I was going to get bombed when I was there…. I didn’t know it was more than that, that it was for women and their needs. I didn’t have insurance, so I went there and I learned about birth control.”
“I think sometimes when children grow up, their parents grow up,” Perry says of her evangelical-minister parents. “Mine grew up with me. We coexist. I don’t try to change them anymore, and I don’t think they try to change me. We agree to disagree. They’re excited about [my success]. They’re happy that things are going well for their three children and that they’re not on drugs. Or in prison.” Perry’s mother confirms that she is proud of her daughter’s success, telling Robinson, “The Lord told us when I was pregnant with her that she would do this.”
“I come from a very non-accepting family, but I’m very accepting,” Perry says of her religious beliefs as an adult. “Russell is into Hinduism, and I’m not [really] involved in it. He meditates in the morning and the evening; I’m starting to do it more because it really centers me. [But] I just let him be him, and he lets me be me.” Perry says she didn’t stick with the mold growing up. “I have always been the kid who’s asked ‘Why?’ In my faith, you’re just supposed to have faith. But I was always like…why?” she says. “At this point, I’m just kind of a drifter. I’m open to possibility…. My sponge is so big and wide and I’m soaking everything up and my mind has been radically expanded. Just being around different cultures and people and their opinions and perspectives. Just looking into the sky.”
413-423 – Calls – I hate legalism. Like Katy Perry, do you also believe that you didn’t have a childhood because of your strict (i.e., legalistic) Christian upbringing? Many kids tend to swing in the other direction when they have children of their own, if you were raised lenient, did you start out as a strict parent? Or, vice versa, were you raised strict and started out as a more lenient parent? Do you think kids raised in a strict household tend to rebel more often than kids in a lenient household?
Steve Arterburn says that “rules without relationship creates rebellion” have you found that’s true in your own life?
Katy says she didn’t get good answers to her “why” questions, she was supposed to just “have faith” – did you have that in common with her too?
If you rebelled, what brought you back? What should we as the church learn from your experience?

458-508 – Calls – As Christians, Jesus commands you and I to forgive our enemies – how ya’ doin’ at forgiving Osama bin Laden, let alone loving him? What does that even look like? Forgiveness usually follows repentance, if the person is living, but how do you forgive someone who’s dead? Repentance requires two people, forgiveness just one – you. We best love our enemies by restraining them from committing evil acts, and sometimes this requires deadly force. Do you believe God loves Osama bin Laden as much as He loves you? How have you forgiven someone who’s hurt you once they had died?
When you cure a disease, you aren’t celebrating the deaths of the virus, you are celebrating the saving of lives.
“I have never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.” – Mark Twain
Some key distinctions: 1) Forgiveness is surrendering your right to revenge. 2) Trust can only be earned. And, 3) Reconciliation occurs when the two are once again united.
• Matthew 5:43-48 – “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

528-539 – • Rabbi Shmuley Boteach (5/2/2011) How to Respond to Osama Bin Laden’s Death. Are we required to love “enemies of God”? The rabbi presents the classic Jewish understanding of Jesus’ teaching on “loving your enemies.”
// But for those who go further and quote to me Jesus’ injunction that we are to love our enemies, I respond that to love murderers is to practice contempt against their victims. Those who do not hate bin Laden have been morally compromised. A member of the Taliban who cuts off a woman’s nose and ears or an Al Qaida terrorist who flies a plane into a building has cast off the image of G-d from their countenance and is no longer our human brother. They deserve not amnesty but abhorrence, not clemency but contempt. And since humans cannot bestow life, neither can they act in the place of G-d and forgive those who take life.
To my Christian brothers and sisters I say, as a Jew who has just completed a book about Jesus that is thoroughly sourced in the New Testament, that Jesus never meant to forgive G-d’s enemies. He words are specific. He says to love your enemy. Your enemy is the guy who steals your parking space. G-d’s enemies are those blow up airplanes. Likewise, in advocating turning the other cheek Jesus never meant that if someone kills 3000 American citizens you are to allow him to kill 3000 British as well. Rather, Jesus meant to forgive petty slights rather than monstrous evil.
I do not believe in revenge, something the Bible explicitly prohibits. The ancient Jewish understanding of the Biblical injunction of ‘an eye for an eye’ was always financial restitution for the lost productivity of an eye rather than the barbaric taking of an organ itself. But I do believe in justice, and forgiving murder or loving a terrorist makes a mockery of human love and a shambles of human justice. The human capacity for love is limited enough without us making the reprehensible mistake of directing even a sliver of our heart away from the victims and toward their culprits.
Ecclesiastes expressed it best. There is not just a time to love but also a time to hate. I hate Osama bin Laden but I will not rejoice in his death. It would have been better for the world had he never been born. But once he was, and once he directed his life to unspeakable cruelty, it was necessary for him to be stopped and killed. And for that I give thanks to G-d and the brave soldiers of the American military for making the world a safer, more just, and innocent place.

• USA Today (5/4/2011) Forgive bin Laden? Dalai Lama’s surprising view.
The Dalai Lama teaches detachment as part of releasing oneself from suffering, and takes such a line on compassion that he won’t swat mosquitoes supping on his blood.
But Wednesday, speaking on”Secular Ethics, Human Values and Society,” to an audience of 3,000 at University of Southern California, he offered a possible understanding of why the USA assassinated Osama bin Laden.
While Buddhist understanding, and most Western religions, counsel compassion, even forgiveness for the evildoer, “Forgiveness doesn’t mean forget what happened.”
According to the Los Angeles Times coverage, he also said it is sometimes necessary to take countermeasures against evil.
But most religions teach that forgiveness follows repentance, an avowed turn to the righteous path. Repentance doesn’t obviate punishment in a just legal system on earth, but it leaves to God the final judgment.
Rev. James Martin at America’s blog In All Things, takes the Catholic view:
I am glad he has left the world. And I pray that his departure may lead to peace. But as a Christian, I am asked to pray for him and, at some point, forgive him. And that command comes to us from Jesus, a man who was beaten, tortured and killed. That command comes from a man who knows a great deal about suffering. It also comes from God..
There’s no hint of repentance in bin Laden’s life, however. So, does he merit forgiveness on earth or in heaven in your faith or philosophy?
• LA Times (5/4/2011) Dalai Lama suggests Osama bin Laden’s death was justified. Speaking at USC, the Buddhist spiritual leader says of the Al Qaeda chief’s assassination: ‘Forgiveness doesn’t mean forget what happened.’

• From Facebook: Matt Sebastian Jesus taught us in Matthew 5:44 to “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. If the purpose of this teaching was to relieve us of the burden of carrying anger and hatred in our hearts, then this teaching should apply not only to those who hurt us personally, but also those who have committed grave sins against several people (such as Bin Laden). Otherwise, if we love our “personal” enemies but hate the mass murderers, we’re still carrying the “burden” Jesus was trying to relieve in the first place.

400-408 – • San Diego 6 (5/3/2011) Former Navy Seal Breaks Down bin Laden Kill Mission.
The Navy SEALs who carried out this week’s capture or kill raid on Usama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan are some of the most physically fit and mentally equipped soldiers on the planet – and for good reason.
These men, known as the Navy’s sea, air, land commandos, are put through what many experts regard as the toughest and most rigorous training in the world.
It involves a seven-week course known as BUD/S, which stands for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALs. This period includes an indoctrination course, followed by a conditioning phase and land warfare phase. If that wasn’t enough, the infamous “Hell Week” is thrown into the mix as well.
This phase of the training is the by far the harshest, with 132 hours of continuous physical training and less than four hours of sleep. This is not only a true test of the limits of a person’s physical capabilities, but it’s really about their mental toughness.
According to one Navy SEAL instructor, “Hell Week” requires 90 percent mental and only 10 percent physical strength and capability. //
• Fox News (5/3/2011) Navy SEALs Exhibit the Ultimate Mental Toughness. Currently, there are about 2,500 active duty Navy SEALs with nine SEAL teams dispersed throughout the East and West Coasts. Every year, about 1,000 men start SEAL training with only 200 to 250 making it through the grueling process.
Commander Mark Divine, was a Navy Seal for 20 years, and is the founder and CEO SEALFIT in Encinitas, where current SEALS and SEAL candidates train to become warrior-athletes (sealfit.com). Commander Divine spent 10 years active duty, 5 years with SEAL Team 3, 2 years at SEAL Delivery Team 1, and 2 years at the Naval Special Warfare Group 1 (with a tour in Iraq in 2004), he has a total of 10 years with the SEAL Reserves. He just retired earlier this year. Mark is a graduate of Colgate University with a BA in Economics, then he did an MBA at NYU, and was working for Cooper & Lybrand on Wall Street preparing to take the CPA exam on Wall Street – when he decided to take on a real challenge, becoming an officer with the Navy SEALS. Osama bin Laden is dead!
My Summary Notes – Seal Team 6 aka “DevGru” (Naval Special Warfare Development Group, under Join Special Operations Command under Vice Admiral William McRaven and soon Maj. Gen. Joseph Votel), had rehearsed the raid at Bagram AFB on 4/7 and 4/13. 24 Seals rappelled into the $1 million compound built just 5 years ago and located just 30 miles NW of Islamabad, at 115am local time. The 40 minute fire fight ended with the death of OBL.
Obama order the execution of bin Laden on Friday, but it was delayed due to weather until 330pm Sunday EST. He watched it live in the War Room.
The nicknames of the two brothers who were bin Laden’s couriers were gotten via waterboarding at Gitmo in 2003. Their names were discovered in 2007. Then, in August 2010, the location of the compound identified. Bin Laden was buried at sea off the carrier USS Carl Vinson at 2am Eastern.

And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates.”

That is the story of our history, whether it’s the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place. 528-539 – Calls – How can Christians rejoice in the death of the wicked when God doesn’t? “Rejoice” – defined, to “feel or show great joy or delight.” Can’t we be grateful without rejoicing? The military celebrates the success of the mission, not the death of their enemies. If enemies surrender, they will not lose their lives. In a far lighter sense from sports, a team celebrates their victory, not the injuries inflicted upon the other team.

528-539 – • “Judas” by Lady Gaga, lyrics. She was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986.
When he comes to me, I am ready, I’ll wash his feet with my hair if he needs
Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain, Even after three times, he betrays me
I’ll bring him down, bring him down, down. A king with no crown, king with no crown
I’m just a Holy fool, oh baby he’s so cruel. But I’m still in love with Judas, baby
I couldn’t love a man so purely. Even darkness forgave his crooked way
I’ve learned love is like a brick, you can. Build a house or sink a dead body
I’ll bring him down, bring him down, down. A king with no crown, king with no crown
[Bridge] In the most Biblical sense, I am beyond repentance
Fame hooker, prostitute wench, vomits her mind
But in the cultural sense, I just speak in future tense, Judas kiss me if offensed, Or wear ear condom next time.
I wanna love you, But something’s pulling me away from you
Jesus is my virtue, Judas is the demon I cling to.
• (7X) YouTube (4/22/2011) Lady GaGa – HBO backstage concert in New York. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta was born on March 28, 1986, and was raised Catholic, and attended Catholic schools. HBO is doing a documentary on her, and they caught this tender moment of her backstage at Madison Square Garden. What’s your analysis of her prayer? What jumps out at you? I think she gets lots of things right. Man, I wish I could talk with her. She needs the Lord, bottom line. I’m sure lots of people are shocked that someone whose art is so perverse can have such a seemingly-genuine spiritual side.
1) “people trying to stop me”
2) “I feel like a loser”
3) “I cannot be destroyed”
4) “I’m fighting for every kid who feels like I do”
5) “I wanna be queen for them”
6) “It’s not about being a winner for me anymore, but for them.”
7-1) “Thank you for the blessings of my friends, family, and fans”
7-2 “Help me to empower those around me”
7-3) “Grant me courage”

BEG 558-608 – Kevin McCullough, nationally-syndicated talk show host, columnist and author (thebingethinker.com), and my favorite guest-host when I’m off riding Barney, is out with a new book entitled No He Can’t: How Barack Obama Is Dismantling Hope and Change (Amazon) which examines the Obama presidency in four areas: Economics, National Security, Foreign Affairs, and Social-Moral Values. As Huckabee pointed out on his television show last week, Kevin was the first person in America to predict an Obama presidency in 2006. 400-408 – Dr. James Dobson, host of Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson (myfamilytalk.com), heard weekdays at 10:00am, along with co-hosts Luanne Crane and his son Ryan Dobson – their one-year anniversary is coming up May 3rd. Doc’s latest book is the long-awaited Bringing Up Girls: Practical Advice and Encouragement for Those Shaping the Next Generation of Women. Shirley is once again the Chairman of the National Day of Prayer coming up the first Thursday of May, May 5th (nationaldayofprayer.org), with this year’s theme “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” – and Joni is the honorary chairperson this year.
• Dr. Dobson will be our special guest-speaker at two upcoming events, both on Thursday, May 26th – first, our Pastor’s Luncheon at the Universal Hilton that’s free to all church leaders and pastors and their wives, and second, our big listener event that evening at Lake Avenue at 7pm. They’re both free, but you need to pre-register with us at kkla.com.
413-423 – Dr. James Dobson, How do we address the modesty-in-clothing issue with our daughters, especially when you’ve got the Bratz dolls and Barbies increasingly looking like pole-dancers, and Abercrombie selling push-up bras for tweens – which, by the way, is getting younger and younger every year.
428-437 – Jeff Myers, will become the new president of Summit Ministries (summit.org) in October 2011, replacing the retiring David Noebel after 49 years of wonderful service – their 50th Anniversary is in 2012 – having mobilized over 150,000 students to intentionally move into positions of culture-shaping influence through in-person programs and study. Jeff was formerly the Chairman of the Board of Summit and the President of Passing the Baton International (passingthebaton.org), and for the past 20 years, he’s been on the front lines of youth leadership development as a college professor, communicator, author and curriculum developer. He’s authored seven books including Handoff, and five video-coaching systems including Understanding the Times, the curriculum that introduced biblical worldview training to Christian schools around the world. More than two million people have used Jeff’s training courses in worldview, leadership and communication. Summit hosts 2-week conferences throughout the summer around the country, and the cost is just $895 for the entire two weeks – a great insurance policy against the thousands of dollars you’ll be paying in college tuition, and a wonderful way to inoculate your kids against the toxic ideas that infect university campuses.
• Jeff and David Noebel are on Family Talk tomorrow with Dr. Dobson at 10am!
443-452 – Jeff Myers, When and how do we start teaching worldview to our kids? Is it ever too late to start? What if we’re new believers ourselves, how do we start?
